When did the British claim Rhode Island?

The British never claimed Rhode Island. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636 as a colony for religious freedom. It became a British colony in 1663, but was granted a royal charter in 1663 that gave it a large amount of autonomy. Rhode Island remained a British colony until the American Revolution, when it became the first of the thirteen colonies to declare independence.
