How did people from Scotland get to the colonies?
There are a number of ways that Scots travelled to the American Colonies. In the early 1700s, many Scots migrated to the United States to escape religious persecution. They were mostly Presbyterians, and they settled in the colonies of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. In the late 1700s, there was a period known as the "Highland Clearances," when many Scots were compelled to leave their homeland due to increased taxation and enclosure of common land. Many people settled in the colony of North Carolina, where they founded the settlement of Fayetteville. Scots also migrated to the colonies as indentured servants, meaning that they agreed to work for a set number of years in exchange for their passage to America. Finally, some Scots came to the colonies as soldiers. during the French and Indian War and also the American Revolutionary War.
