Who discovered Scotland?
The ancient Romans are believed to have coined the name Scotia when referring to the people and land north of the firths of Forth and Clyde, which they called Caledonia, from the P-Celtic word Caledonii, meaning "hard" or "tough". The earliest extant written reference to Scotia is in a prayer, "Domine Salvam Fac Reginam", preserved in a manuscript from 1050. The first recorded usage of the name Scotia for the medieval kingdom of Scotland is in the late 12th century.
