What is UK resident?

A UK resident is an individual who has their main home in the United Kingdom. This means that they spend more than half of the year (183 days or more) in the UK.

There are different types of UK residency, including:

* Domiciled residents: These are individuals who have their permanent home in the UK and intend to remain there indefinitely.

* Non-domiciled residents: These are individuals who have their permanent home outside the UK but spend more than half of the year in the UK.

* Resident but not domiciled (R2): These are individuals who have their permanent home outside the UK but have significant economic ties to the UK, such as a job or business.

The status of UK residency has important implications for an individual's tax liability. Domiciled residents are generally taxed on their worldwide income and gains, while non-domiciled residents are only taxed on their UK income and gains.

To determine an individual's residency status, a number of factors are considered, including:

* The length of time the individual spends in the UK

* The purpose of the individual's stay in the UK

* The individual's family and social ties to the UK

* The individual's economic ties to the UK

If an individual is unsure of their residency status, they can contact the UK tax authorities (HMRC) for clarification.
