Are people in the UK allowed to own guns?
In the United Kingdom, gun ownership is strictly regulated by the government. Individuals are not allowed to own handguns, but may apply for a shotgun or rifle licence if they meet certain criteria. To obtain a firearm licence, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a good reason for owning a firearm (e.g. target shooting, pest control), and pass a background check which includes checks on their criminal record, mental health, and references. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate that they have a secure place to store their firearms, and may be subject to inspections of their premises by the police.
The granting of firearm certificates (licenses) is at the discretion of the local police force, and they are not obliged to issue a license if they do not believe that an individual meets the necessary criteria.
