How long have police been around in England?

The modern police force in England was established with the Metropolitan Police Act of 1829, which created the Metropolitan Police Service for the London metropolitan area. Before that, policing was carried out by various local watchmen and constables, as well as by the military. The Metropolitan Police Service is the oldest modern police force in the world.
