Was Scotland taken over by England?
Scotland was not taken over by England; the two countries united voluntarily in 1707 to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. After centuries of often-bloody conflict between the nations the Acts of Union were passed by their respective parliaments, and came into effect on 1 May 1707. While this did result in Scotland effectively ceasing to exist as an independent political entity, its status as a separate legal jurisdiction, with legal, educational and religious institutions distinct from the rest of Great Britain, remains to this day.
