- The Murray River, Australia's longest river and the Darling River, its longest tributary, are located within this basin.

- The Murray River stretches approximately 2,375 km (1,476 mi) from its source in the Australian Alps to its mouth at Lake Alexandrina in South Australia, where it joins the Southern Ocean.

- The Darling River measures around 1,472 km (915 mi) long and joins the Murray River near Wentworth in New South Wales.
