Statue of Liberty's Seven Rays: The Continents They Represent

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's crown design wasn't arbitrary. The seven rays radiating from Liberty's diadem symbolize the seven continents—her light reaching every landmass on Earth.

The Seven Continents

  1. Africa
  2. Antarctica
  3. Asia
  4. Australia (Oceania)
  5. Europe
  6. North America
  7. South America

Design Intent

Bartholdi envisioned Liberty Enlightening the World (the statue's formal name) as a universal beacon. The crown's rays = sunburst = enlightenment spreading globally. The tablet in her left hand bears JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776)—American independence as catalyst for universal liberty.

Common Confusion

Some count Europe and Asia as one (Eurasia = six continents). Others separate Oceania from Australia. The seven-continent model (taught in US, UK, China, India, etc.) matches the rays. The six-continent model (taught in Latin America, parts of Europe) would leave one ray unexplained—unless you combine Antarctica (uninhabited) or merge Americas.

Bonus Symbolism

  • 25 windows in the crown = gemstones/heaven's rays
  • Broken chains at feet = abolition of slavery
  • Right foot raised = forward motion, progress

The crown reopened to visitors in 2009 (after 9/11 closure). Reserve 6+ months ahead. 354 steps from pedestal. The view—and the symbolism—are worth the climb.
