Hawaii: The Only US State Outside the Contiguous United States

Hawaii is the sole US state not part of the contiguous United States (the "Lower 48").

What "Contiguous" Means

Contiguous = sharing a border. The 48 contiguous states all touch at least one other state, forming a single connected landmass bordered by Canada (north) and Mexico (south).

Hawaii's Difference

  • Archipelago: 137 islands/atolls, 1,500 miles across North Pacific.
  • Distance: 2,400 mi from California; 3,850 mi from Japan.
  • Statehood: August 21, 1959 (50th state).
  • Time zone: HST (UTC-10), no DST.

Alaska: Also Non-Contiguous, But Connected

Alaska borders Canada—so it's part of continental North America but not the contiguous US. "Continental US" = 49 states (incl. Alaska). "Contiguous US" = 48 states. Hawaii is neither.

Why It Matters

Shipping costs, federal programs (e.g., Jones Act), military strategy (INDOPACOM), time zones, biodiversity (endemic species), cultural distinctness. Hawaii's isolation shapes everything from grocery prices to energy policy.
