U.S. Navy Ranks: Commissioned Officers & Enlisted
The Navy maintains two parallel hierarchies: Commissioned Officers (leadership, command) and Enlisted Sailors (technical execution, supervision). Warrant Officers bridge both.
Commissioned Officers (Highest to Lowest)
- Fleet Admiral (FADM) – 5★ (wartime only; last: Nimitz, 1945).
- Admiral (ADM) – 4★ (CNO, combatant commanders).
- Vice Admiral (VADM) – 3★ (fleet/force commanders).
- Rear Admiral (Upper Half) (RADM) – 2★ (strike group, expeditionary strike group).
- Rear Admiral (Lower Half) (RDML) – 1★ (formerly Commodore).
- Captain (CAPT) – O-6 (ship CO: carrier, cruiser, sub; major shore command).
- Commander (CDR) – O-5 (XO of major ship; CO of destroyer, frigate, sub, squadron).
- Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) – O-4 (department head, staff officer).
- Lieutenant (LT) – O-3 (division officer, junior department head).
- Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) – O-2 (junior division officer).
- Ensign (ENS) – O-1 (newly commissioned; USNA, NROTC, OCS grads).
Warrant Officers
CWO2–CWO5 (W-2 to W-5). Technical specialists (aviation, engineering, cyber, intel) commissioned via warrant. Senior to all enlisted; junior to O-1.

Key Distinctions
- Officers: Commission from President; authority derives from office.
- Enlisted: Contract; authority from rate/rating expertise.
- Ratings (jobs): e.g., ET (Electronics Tech), HM (Hospital Corpsman), MA (Master-at-Arms).
Rank = paygrade + title; rating = occupational specialty. Both worn on uniform.
