Bluefield, W.Va. Attractions

Bluefield, W.Va., is a town of about 11,000 people on the southwest side of the state near the West Virginia-Virginia border. Located in Mercer County, Bluefield boasts being a certified retirement community as well as one of the top 100 communities for young people, according to the city's official website. The area has a rich history of coal-mining and a wide range of sites to visit that celebrate the area's heritage, according to the Mercer County Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
  1. Historic Sites

    • The Baldwin House features jail cells and the secret office of the Baldwin Felts Detective Agency. You also can visit Buddy's Country Store & Museum, which honors the area's history with a depiction of a coal camp home. The Eastern Regional Coal Archives is where you can go to see artifacts, blueprints, films, maps, old miner's tools, photographs, newspapers and other memorabilia.

    Tours

    • Take a walking tour of Bluefield and see eight historic Victorian buildings in downtown that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To add a little excitement, try the Bluefield Historic Ghost Tour. However, this isn't one for the family. You must be 18 or older to attend.

    Sports and Recreation

    • Enjoy the enthusiasm and the spirit behind hometown baseball with the Bluefield Bluejays. If golf is your thing, try the Elks Club Golf Courses for nine holes of fun. Relax at Lotito City Park or schedule a visit to go see the animals at Chestnut Springs Farm.

    Concerts and Theater

    • There's a wide range of places to go for concerts, plays and other theater performances in Bluefield. Check out the schedules at Bluefield College, Bluefield State College and the Bluefield Performing Arts Center to see what shows are playing during your visit. The Summit Theater offers performances as well as camps for children. Bluefield also has movie theaters in case a flick you can't miss comes out during your vacation.
