There are more than 15 fishing charter companies in the Valdez area, available for both saltwater and freshwater fishing. Some charters offer overnight and multi-day adventures, while others will take you out for a few hours. Tackle, bait and snacks are usually provided. Saltwater charters take guests into Prince William Sound where they can fish for pink salmon, king salmon, silver salmon, chum salmon, shark, halibut, rock fish and ling cod.
Freshwater fishing is generally for lake trout, rainbow trout, grayling and dolly varden along the inland rivers.
Each May through September Valdez hosts four types of fishing derbies for halibut and salmon. Charters can be hired to compete in these events, and derby tickets are $10 per day or $50 for the season. The grand prize is $15,000.
Anyone over the age of 16 must have a fishing license issued by the state of Alaska. These can be purchased in sporting goods and grocery stores. A one-day pass for a non-resident is $10, with an additional fee for King Salmon.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game sets limits on the size and quantity of fish caught. Charter captains will ensure guests do not claim more than the legal limits.
Many charters will clean the fish at the end of the trip. If your charter does not offer this service, there are locations dockside that will prepare the fish for a small fee. Companies like Easy Freeze Inc. will pack, freeze and ship your catch for you.
