Three Facts About the Pennsylvania Map

Six states border Pennsylvania as does one of the Great Lakes, so technically speaking, Pennsylvania has a border with Canada, though it is a very wet one. So roll out your map of the Keystone State, and take a close look at its many borders and its impressive size.

  1. Mason-Dixon Line

    • The border between Maryland and Pennsylvania corresponds exactly with the famous Mason-Dixon Line. This line was actually surveyed and marked in Colonial times by an English astronomer and surveyor to settle a land dispute between the colonies of Maryland and Pennsylvania.

    Delaware Water Gap

    • The Delaware River forms the eastern boundary of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It forms the long meandering edge that separates the two states, all the way from the New York State line to the short curved border that Delaware has with Pennsylvania.

    Urban-suburban Border

    • The Delaware River also creates a significant border between the large city of Philadelphia and smaller New Jersey towns of Camden, Gloucester City and Collingswood.

    Centrally Located Capitol

    • Harrisburg is the capitol of Pennsylvania. It is located on the Susquehanna River, and the city's central location within the state helps the place function as the center of state government.

    Lake Eire

    • The city of Eire is located on the shores of Lake Eire. From here, it is possible to go by boat directly to Canada.

    Six State Borders

    • Pennsylvania shares its state border with six states. They are Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, New Jersey and Delaware.
