The Best Time to Go to the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon offers astonishing views and peaceful trails for hiking, biking, camping and even horseback riding. But, it's hard to enjoy the tranquil hum of nature when you're surrounded by thousands of tourists taking selfies. That's why the best time to visit the Grand Canyon is in the off season.

  1. March to May

    • Spring is the best time to visit the Grand Canyon because the weather's somewhat warm, and the summer tourists haven't arrived yet. Wait until April or May if you want to see the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, because snow keeps that area closed throughout the winter and early spring. Temperatures fluctuate unpredictably at this time of the year, so keep a jacket and layers handy.

    September to November

    • Autumn is another great time to visit the Grand Canyon. Early in September, you'll catch the end of the Grand Canyon Music Festival, which means bigger crowds but great entertainment. There are fewer tourists when you get deeper into the season, towards November. Once the snow starts falling, parts of the Grand Canyon will be off limits. However, plenty of hiking and exploring can be done in the South Rim. Pack for warm days -- up to 70 degrees -- and cold nights, with temperatures in the 20s.
