What materials were used to build the Bloukrans Bridge?

Concrete and Steel

The Bloukrans Bridge is a concrete arch bridge with a suspended span composed of two 100-m-long steel suspension bridges. It is made up of the following major components:

- Concrete arches: The main arches of the bridge are hollow and made of concrete with reinforcing steel. They have a span of 272.15m and are 18m wide at the base.

- Hangers and suspension cables: The two main suspension cables are each made up of 180 individual strands of 5.34-mm-diameter galvanized steel wire. They are hung from the tops of the concrete arches and support the deck of the bridge.

- Deck: The deck of the bridge is made of steel and concrete. It is 11.8 metres wide and is surfaced with a layer of asphalt concrete.

- Pylons: The two 216m-high pylons that support the suspension cables are made of reinforced concrete.

- Anchor blocks: The anchor blocks at each end of the bridge are made of concrete. They are used to anchor the suspension cables and resist the tension forces in the cables.
