Does the Tennessee River Flow Into the Mississippi? Not Directly

The Tennessee River does not flow directly into the Mississippi River. Instead, it follows a 652-mile (1,049 km) course through Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky before joining the Ohio River at Paducah, Kentucky. The Ohio River then continues west and flows into the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois.

As one of the Ohio River's largest tributaries, the Tennessee contributes significant flow—averaging ~68,000 cubic feet per second (1,900 m³/s)—making it a critical component of the greater Mississippi River Basin. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) manages a system of dams and reservoirs along the river for navigation, flood control, hydropower, and recreation.

So while the Tennessee's waters eventually reach the Mississippi, they do so via the Ohio River—making it a tributary of a tributary of the Mississippi.
