Five Major Threats to Sea Animals: Overfishing, Pollution, Climate & More
Marine life faces a crisis of cumulative pressures. Here are the five most critical threats — interconnected and escalating.
1. Overfishing & Destructive Fishing
- 34% of stocks overfished (FAO); 60% maximally sustainably fished.
- Bycatch: 10–40% of global catch discarded — dolphins, turtles, sharks, juveniles.
- Shark finning: 73M sharks/yr killed for fins; bodies dumped.
- Bottom trawling: Bulldozes seafloor, destroys coral/sponge habitats.
2. Pollution
- Plastic: 11M metric tons/yr enter ocean; microplastics in 100% tested species.
- Chemical: Agricultural runoff (N/P) → dead zones (Gulf of Mexico, Baltic).
- Noise: Shipping, sonar, seismic disrupts communication, navigation, feeding (whales).
- Oil & heavy metals: Chronic leaks + spills; bioaccumulate in food webs.
3. Climate Change
- Warming: Range shifts, coral bleaching (50% reefs lost since 1950), metabolic stress.
- Acidification: 30% more acidic since Industrial Rev; dissolves shells (pteropods, oysters, corals).
- Deoxygenation: Warmer water holds less O₂; expanding oxygen minimum zones.
- Sea-level rise: Drowns nesting beaches (turtles), mangroves, salt marshes.
4. Habitat Destruction
- Coastal development: Mangroves (35% lost), seagrass (7%/yr), salt marshes — nurseries destroyed.
- Dredging, mining, aquaculture: Direct removal of benthic habitat.
- Coral reef loss: 14% gone 2009–2018; functional extinction by 2050 without action.
5. Bycatch (Revisited as Systemic Issue)
- Not just "accidental" — gear design (gillnets, longlines, trawls) inherently non-selective.
- 300,000+ cetaceans/yr drowned in nets.
- Solutions exist: TEDs (turtle excluders), circle hooks, acoustic pingers, time/area closures — but adoption lags.
The Path Forward
Marine Protected Areas (30×30), ecosystem-based fisheries management, plastic treaty, decarbonization, gear innovation — all needed simultaneously. No single fix suffices.
