Nikko Motorcoach Tours

With its stunning natural scenery and historic Shinto shrines, the Japanese city of Nikko is a popular destination for motorcoach tours. A number of travel outfits offer identical one-day tours of the Nikko area departing from Tokyo, 90 miles to the south.
  1. Itinerary

    • The standard tour itinerary includes the World Heritage site of Toshogu Shrine as well as the natural attractions of Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. There also is a drive along Irohazaka road, which once had 48 hairpin curves, each named for a character in the Japanese alphabet (it now has 30 curves).

    Logistics

    • The 10- to 11-hour tours depart from Tokyo's Hamamatsucho bus terminal, though individual tourism agencies will arrange earlier pickups from several Tokyo hotels. The tours end with a drop-off at the Tokyo areas of Ginza or Shinjuku, with travelers responsible for their own hotel return.

    Guides, Meals, Cost

    • English-speaking guides and one meal are included in the tour price, which in October 2009 was approximately $150.

    Tour Agencies

    • Some of the companies offering motorcoach tours include Indus (industours.net), JAPANiCAN (japanican.com), Nippon Travel Agency (ntainbound.com) and Viatour (viator.com).

    When to Go

    • Leaf-peepers note that mid-October through mid-November is peak season for fall foliage. Some agencies reduce service in the winter months of January and February.
