Once you have met all of the requirements, you can apply for a license online or by mail. The application process includes submitting a completed application form, fingerprints, a passport-style photograph, and a copy of your security guard certification. You will also be required to provide references from three people who can vouch for your good character and qualifications.
The DLS will review your application and make a decision within 60 days. If your application is approved, you will be issued a license. The license is valid for two years and must be renewed every two years.
In addition to the state license, you may also need to obtain a local license if you plan to work in a particular city or town. For example, the City of New York requires all bodyguards to obtain a license from the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). The DCA license requires you to meet additional requirements, such as passing a background check and completing a training program.
By obtaining the proper licenses and meeting the required qualifications, you can ensure that you are legally authorized to work as a bodyguard in New York.
