In California When is it OK for a child under 8 to ride in the front seat?

In California, according to the California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 27360, children under 8 years old are required to ride in a child restraint system. This means that they must be secured in a car seat or booster seat appropriate for their age, weight, and height.

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. Children under 8 years old may ride in the front seat of a vehicle if:

- The child is at least 4 feet 9 inches tall;

- The vehicle is equipped with a passenger airbag that can be manually turned off (or does not have a passenger airbag);

- The child is properly secured in a child restraint system that meets federal safety standards;

- The child is accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other adult who is at least 18 years old.
