Alternatives to Renting a Car

You arrive at your destination, grab your bags and head for the exit.
Assuming you're not being met by a friend or relative, bypass the car rental booths and head for alternative transportation.
But first, do your homework. What's available? Where can you connect? What are the schedules, the costs? Each city will be different.
  1. Public Transportation

    • While major cities are building subway and elevated transportation systems as a way to reduce traffic congestion, some are far ahead of the game, as in San Francisco (http://www.bart.gov/) and New York (http://www.mta.info/nyct/subway/index.html). Check to make sure the system you want to use can take you where you need to go.
Subways can be confusing and involve a combination of transports such as public buses and trains. Researching your route, times, transfers, stations and costs before you arrive will make your alternative transportation choices easier.

    Ride Share

    • Car pooling is an energy-saving alternative to car renting.
Shuttle vans and buses run from airports and bus and train stations to major hotels or downtown areas in many cities. Check the schedules before you arrive, or simply go to the shuttle stop area on your arrival and find transportation there.
In some cities, ride sharing is an option. Single drivers who take on passengers can use designated carpool lanes to bypass heavy single driver traffic. There are points where riders can find vehicles going their way.
The traditional transportation alternative, cabs, are also ride share possibilities when several passengers are going the same direction.

    Go Green

    • In mild weather, or mild climates, electric Segways can be an alternative way to zip around cities. They even have attachable carriers for golf clubs or baggage, and recharge while you play a round.
When traveling light, bikes are a good alternative to getting around.
Rentals for both are available in many cities, where you'll also find maps, helmets and other helpful necessities.
