Lynchberg, Virginia is known as the "City of Seven Hills" because of its location in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at the banks of the James River. Lynchberg was the only southern city that did not fall to union armies during the Civil War, and remains an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia to this day.
