In the local indigenous Abenaki language, Ogunquit means "beautiful place by the sea," and no one who has visited this charming Maine resort town would beg to differ. Three miles of white sand along the shore makes a beautiful setting for a variety of hotels.
Perched on a cliff adjacent to the Perkins Cove waterfront, the all-suite Grand Hotel is geared toward adults and quiet relaxation, including in-room massages. The hotel's sister property, Pink Blossoms Resort, is the place to go for families with children. No matter which hotel you choose, you'll be just a trolley ride away from more than a dozen restaurants serving lobster pulled from the traps that very morning.
The water nearly laps the balconies of the main building of the Sparhawk Oceanfront Resort, and all rooms face the sea. Similarly, Anchorage by the Sea has ocean-view rooms -- some with a fireplace -- and an upscale seaside restaurant. The Beachmere Inn is a sprawling oceanfront complex on a lush green lawn, with a pub, bistro and summer lobster bakes.
Built in 1887, the Colonial Inn is the last of the grand hotels that once were the centerpiece of Ogunquit. Although refurbished, it still retains its Victorian ambience and features two floors of fine dining with an ocean view from every table.
