A favela is an urban informal settlement in Brazil. Favelas are built on steep hillsides or other marginal lands, and due to the lack of sanitation and infrastructure favelas are often associated with poverty and crime. However, favelas are also home to a diverse population of people who are creative, resilient, and resourceful.
