San Diego Zoo Pet Policy: No Dogs Allowed (Including Leashed)
The San Diego Zoo does not permit any pets — including leashed dogs — inside the park.
Policy Details
- Applies to: San Diego Zoo (Balboa Park) and San Diego Zoo Safari Park (Escondido).
- Reason: Animal welfare (zoo animals stressed by predator scent/behavior), disease control (canine distemper, parvovirus), guest safety, AZA accreditation standards.
- No Exceptions: Emotional support animals, therapy dogs, small dogs in carriers — all excluded.
Service Animals (ADA)
- Only trained service dogs (guide, hearing, mobility, medical alert, psychiatric) are permitted per ADA / California law.
- Requirements: Must be harnessed/leashed/tethered (unless interferes with task), under control, housebroken.
- Restricted Areas: Some habitats (e.g., aviaries, primate forests, behind-the-scenes) may exclude service animals for zoonotic risk — zoo provides kenneling + escort.
- Advance Notice: Recommended — contact Guest Services (619-231-1515) to coordinate.
Pet Alternatives
- Kennels: Zoo does not offer on-site boarding.
- Nearby Pet Care: Camp Run-A-Mutt (Downtown), Dog Day Afternoon (North Park), Rover/Wag sitters.
- Plan Ahead: Leave dog at hotel/home with sitter.
