Texas LTC Reciprocity: Where Your License Travels
Texas License to Carry (LTC) holders enjoy reciprocity with 31 states (plus Texas itself), allowing legal concealed carry across most of the United States. This reflects Texas's broad recognition agreements and the LTC's training standards meeting or exceeding most states' requirements.
Full Reciprocity States (Honor Texas LTC)
Southern/Mountain West (15): Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming
Important Caveats and Conditions
- Always verify current status: Reciprocity agreements change; check Texas DPS website before travel
- Follow local laws: You're subject to each state's carry laws (prohibited locations, duty to inform, magazine limits, etc.)
- Non-resident permits: Some states require their own non-resident permit even with reciprocity
- Constitutional carry states: Many reciprocal states now allow permitless carry—but LTC provides reciprocity in non-constitutional-carry states
- Federal restrictions: Still apply (school zones, federal buildings, post offices, etc.)
States NOT Honoring Texas LTC (as of 2024)
California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, plus District of Columbia.
Recent Trends
- Texas enacted constitutional carry (permitless carry) in 2021 (HB 1927) for eligible persons 21+
- LTC still valuable for: reciprocity, NICS background check bypass, training certification, legal protections
- Several states have moved to constitutional carry, reducing but not eliminating reciprocity value
Responsible Carry Across State Lines
- Research destination state's specific laws (handgunlaw.us, USCCA reciprocity map)
- Carry license + government photo ID at all times
- Know prohibited locations (schools, government buildings, bars, etc.)
- Understand duty-to-inform requirements during police encounters
- Respect private property "no guns" signage where legally enforceable
Texas LTC holders enjoy among the nation's broadest carry reciprocity—but with that privilege comes responsibility to know and follow each jurisdiction's laws.
