Why was Big Bend National Park chosen as a park?

The United States Congress established Big Bend National Park in 1944. There are multiple reasons why Big Bend was chosen as a park.

The area's unique geology, including the Chisos Mountains, Rio Grande, and the Chihuahuan Desert, made it an attractive destination for tourists. The park is home to various plant and animal life, including many species found nowhere else in the United States. Additionally, the area's cultural history, including Native American ruins and Spanish colonial missions, made it a significant historical site.

The establishment of Big Bend National Park was also largely due to the efforts of conservationists Ernest C. Oberholtzer and J. O. Langford, who spent over a decade advocating for its protection. Their work, along with the support of local and state governments, eventually culminated in the passing of legislation to create the national park.
