Motels Near the ACU Airport

ACU is the abbreviation for the Achutupo Airport in Panama, located on an island off of the country's north Caribbean coast. Achutupo is in the Kuna Yala territory, home to wildlife, pristine scenery and indigenous cultures that still live largely the way they did before the arrival of Spanish explorers 500 years ago. Achutupo is an excellent destination for travelers interested in native culture and handicrafts. The area features several lodging options.
  1. Uaguinega Ecoresort

    • Uaguinega Ecoresort (uaguinega.com) is located on a private island across the channel from Achutupo. Uaguinega means "House of the Dolphin" in the Kuna language, and dolphins can be seen from the island at certain times of the year. The Uaguinega Ecoresort features seventeen bungalows, built in native Kuna style, located along the beach with hammocks between them. The bungalows feature thatched roofs, large private baths and porches with ocean views. Tours of the Kuna Islands and burial sites can be arranged.

    Sunset Cabins

    • The Sunset Cabins resort (panamaportobelocabins.com) is located in Portobelo, less than 10 miles by boat from the Achutupo Airport. Cabins are equipped with air-conditioning and ocean-view balconies. The resort's restaurant serves local cuisine based on fresh seafood. The property has kayaking and scuba diving tours available, and boat tours to the lodge's private island may also be arranged. Visitors may also wish to tour the historic sites of Portobelo, established in 1597. The city was once an important fortified port, but centuries of pirate attacks eventually left it in ruins. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Dadibe Lodge

    • Dadibe Lodge (dadibelodge.com), located on a private island fifteen minutes from Achutupo Airport, consists of three huts and an open-air restaurant laid out in the form of a traditional Kuna village. The huts feature cane walls, private bathrooms and balconies. The restaurant serves fresh seafood, including lobster and king crab. From the island, visitors have views of the Caribbean and mainland mountains. Snorkeling equipment is available for rent, and tours can be arranged to the historic Kuna village of Ailigandi and several uninhabited islands in the area.

    Tropic Star Lodge

    • Tropic Star Lodge (tropicstar.com), located in Bahia Pinas, about 15 miles by boat from Achutupo Airport, was built in the 1960s by a Texas millionaire. The lodge, carved out of the jungle next to the Darien wilderness, bills itself as the "Black Marlin Capital of the World." Package rates include daily fishing excursions and three meals a day. Rooms are air-conditioned and feature porches with ocean views. In addition to fishing, the lodge offers a white-sand beach, snorkeling, kayaking and hiking on jungle trails.
