DIY Bunk Bed for Camping

Nothing says lazy Sunday morning like lying in a hammock in your backyard on a warm summer day. However, if you are not lucky enough to have two mature trees in your yard that you can hang a hammock from, bypass that thought and envision the same relaxation opportunity by bringing one along with you on a camping trip. You can hang lightweight hammocks between most matures trees and you will reap the rewards by sleeping more comfortably off the ground while on your camping trip. Hang two hammocks, one atop the other, to snooze in bunk beds under the stars.

Things You'll Need

  • Two single. lightweight hammocks
  • 4 locking carabiners

Instructions

    • 1

Look for two large mature trees that are anywhere from 7 to 15 feet apart. Read the instructions that come with your hammocks to determine how far apart the trees should be according to strap and hammock lengths. Generally, you can lay your hammock down on the ground and allot for at least one more foot of its total length.

    • 2

Climb up one tree and wrap one end of a rope (at least 6 feet longer than the distance between the trees) around the trunk about. Securely tie it 4 feet above where you want your first hammock to sit. This rope can be used later on if you want to drape a tarp over it to keep you and your bunk buddy dry, or you can also drape a mosquito net over it to keep unwanted bugs from disturbing you while you sleep.

Stay in the tree once you tie one end of the rope around the tree. Drape one hammock strap around the trunk at an appropriate height below the rope. Make sure that you allot for enough space below the first hammock strap because you will adding a second one underneath it.

    • 4

Climb up the other tree. Tie the other end of the rope at about the same height as you tied on the first tree. Make sure that the rope is tight and does not droop too much. Take the other hammock strap and wrap it around the trunk of the tree at about the same height as where the hammock strap sits on the first tree.

    • 5

Use a locking carabiner (a strong metal ring with a locking device) in an open position to secure one end of the first hammock to the strap. Close it and then twist the locking mechanism on the caribiner in a clockwise direction until it is locked. Then slightly turn them to the left to open it by a small amount. Affix another caribiner to the strap on the other tree with the other end of the hammock.

Adjust the tree straps at this point so they are tight enough and won't slide down the tree. Stretch the hammock and tighten the straps even further by using the ratchet that comes with the straps.

    • 7

Drape the second set of hammock straps around both trunks about 3 feet below the first hammock. Repeat step four with the second set of caribiners and appropriate straps. Make sure the straps are tight with this hammock as well by using the ratchet.

Drape a large tarp or mosquito netting over the rope you initially hung to cover both bunk bed hammocks.
