For years, common wisdom was that the circadian rhythm of humans was regulated by night and day or light and dark. Researchers working with mice have recently learned that the circadian rhythm, or biological sleep pattern, can be regulated through food.
Plan to fast, or go without food, for a short period of time. If you know you are traveling internationally, schedule your time before departure to allow for a period of no eating.
Figure out when breakfast is in your destination. Count back 16 hours, taking into account your own time zone and your travel time. According to researchers, 16 hours seems to be the optimal length of fasting necessary to engage this body clock.
Break your fast with breakfast in your new time zone. You will probably still feel sleepy but remember that it's better to have one day of weariness than to feel that way for many days.
