Decide if a hostel associated with Hostelling International or an independent hostel is right for you.

Take public transportation when staying in large cities or towns, such as the Rome Metro. This is a great way to see European cities, and it will not cost you nearly as much as renting a vehicle.
Rent a bicycle when possible. Many large metropolitan areas provide bike rentals. It is a cheap way to travel, and it is great for you too.
Eat only one meal or less per day in restaurants.
Purchase food items from markets that are ready-to-eat or prepare sandwiches for at least two meals per day.
Use the hostel's kitchen whenever possible to prepare your own meals.
Take advantage of cheap meals offered by the hostel. Some hostels offer inexpensive meals, while some do not.
