New York City Rain Activities

According to nycgo.com, New York City received 45.6 million visitors in 2009. It isn't hard to believe when you consider all of the outstanding things there are to do in New York City. If it's a rainy day and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge or hanging out in Central Park won't work, there are certainly plenty of activities to enjoy.
  1. American Museum of Natural History

    • You can easily spend an entire day at the American Museum of Natural History, especially if you take the time to see an IMAX movie and participate in the interactive activities that are available. The Discovery room, one of the museums interactive areas includes activities such as tracking real time earthquakes or assembling dinosaur bones. The museum is open everyday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. As of September 2, 2010 the suggested General Admission to the museum is $16 for Adults and $9 for children (2-12) or you can simply make a donation of your choice at any of the admission desks. If you make a donation rather than paying the suggested admission and would like to see an IMAX movie or attend a special exhibition, you can purchase those specific tickets at any admission desk by adding $20 per adult, $11 per child, or $16.50 for a senior or student to the amount you contributed for your general admission.

    Angelika Film Center

    • The Angelika Film Center is a well known arthouse amongst filmmakers and shows independent films that you can't find at your local cineplex. Organic sandwiches, specialty drinks, or vegan cupcakes are all available in the Angelika café which is a part of the Film Center. As of September 2, 2010, tickets are $13 for adults, $9 for seniors, and $9 for children.

    Chelsea Market

    • The Chelsea Market is open for lazy day wandering Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 8a.m. - 6 p.m. The market is on 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th. You can browse Posman's Independent book store, enjoy lunch at Morimoto, and shop at a variety of stores including Gramercy Flower Shop, Fat Witch Bakery, or Chelsea Wine Vault.

    The Metropolitan Museum of Art

    • The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world's largest art museums and would take more than a lifetime to explore. Its collection is made up of over two million works of art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is closed Mondays (except their holiday Mondays- Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Christmas and New Year's week: December 27, 2010.) Tuesday-Thursday the museum is open from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Friday and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. The recommended admission cost for adults is $20, Seniors (65 and older) $15, Students $10, and children under 12 are free.
