Greek Island Vacations for Women in Their 40s

More than 200 of the 6,000 Greek Islands are populated, strewn amid the Ionian and Aegean seas. Famous for their beaches and historical significance and attributes, travelers from all over have come to see the Greek Isles. Women in their 40s will enjoy much of what the Greek Islands have to offer. If you enjoy lying out by the beach, hiking to archeological sites, learning about ancient civilizations or eating fine Greek cuisine, then the Islands of Greece will cater to your vacation needs. Whether planning the vacation on your own or taking a guided trip, here are the must-see destinations you should hit on your Greek Isle vacation.
  1. Crete

    • The ancient Minoan culture began on Crete and houses the Palace of Knossos, where King Minos was believed to live. Legend says that Minos' wife gave birth to a half bull, half man, the Minotaur. If you are a hiker, the White Mountains provides a somewhat difficult 12-mile hike down to a village by the sea, where you are able to cool off in the water. A well-known hotel, Elounda Mare, offers views of the Mirabella Bay and includes three highly praised restaurants, noted by author Patricia Schultz in "1,000 Places to See Before You Die." The best times to visit are between April and October.

    Santorini

    • A volcanic island, Santorini is thought by some to be the remnants of the lost land of Atlantis. Famous for its white wine, more than 30 types of grapes grow in Santorini in the volcanic soil. Recommended by Schultz in "1,000 Places to See Before You Die," the family run-hotel, Perivolas, offers views of the Mediterranean. The best times to visit are between April and July and September and October.

    Patmos

    • The Sacred Grotto, where John is believed to have written the Book of Revelations, is located on Patmos. Another highlight is the Monastery of St. John the Theologian, built in the 11th century. The best time to visit is in April.

    Rhodes

    • Old Town, built in the Middle Ages, holds fast to its history, preserving the medieval characteristics in its remaining structures. Rhodes is where the Order of the Knights of John fought to keep outsiders (the Ottomans) from coming in. Rich with historical significance, the best times to visit are April through November.

    Guided Tours

    • The Island Hopping Programs provided by Greece Tour Experts offers several guided tours, including visiting a variety of islands. Trips usually last from 5 to 11 days.
