Visit the War Eagle Monument in Sioux City. View the monument perched high above the city on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River and the confluence of three states: Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Just off Interstate 29, the 13-foot statue is said to be the burial marker for Chief War Eagle, a former chief of the Yankton Sioux tribe.
Travel back in time and visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Located on the banks of the Missouri River, the facility documents the travels of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. Highlights include their stops in the Sioux City area and maps depicting their local influence. Visitors can view a movie about the life and times of the Lewis and Clark expedition, view Native American artifacts and learn historical information about the Sioux City region.
Take in a ball game at the Lewis and Clark Ballpark. Summertime baseball games are a popular family attraction in Sioux City. Enjoy summer classics like hot dogs, popcorn, a cold beer and even special BBQ nights at the ballpark. Entertainment for the kids includes dancing with the mascot, participating in bat races and ball toss games, testing hitting skills in the batter’s box and running the bases at the end of the game.
Learn more historical facts about the region by visiting the Sergeant Floyd Monument. The pencil-shaped monument resembles the famed Washington Monument. The bones of Sergeant Floyd Jr. are encased in the 100-foot concrete structure that stands high above Sioux City in the Morningside area of town. Floyd was the only member of the Corps of Discovery to die along the journey.
