Begin the tour by crossing under the lofty portico with its modified Tuscan columns and entering the dark, oak-paneled foyer. In the corner by the leaded glass front door is a fireplace, while straight ahead is the grand staircase with its stained glass windows on the landing. The foyer was used as an informal living room by the Scotts.
Turn right and view the masculine library, with its red carpet, green and amber walls and leaded glass bookcases. To the left of the foyer is the feminine drawing room, with gray and mauve painted woodwork. Beyond that is the dining room, which has a semi-circular marble solarium to one side.
Continue to the right and southeast through the morning room and kitchen and go to the room directly across the hall from the dining room, on the southwest corner of the house. Originally the museum staff thought this was a music room, but evidence seems to indicate that this was probably a game, card or billiard room. The hallway between the game room and library leads out to the porte-cochere, a sort of carport that provided shelter for people arriving or departing from their cars or carriages during rain storms.
Go upstairs to the master bedroom on the eastern side. To the left is a closet with hidden wall safe, and beyond that a bathroom and a dressing room with a fireplace and three-way mirror. Southeast of the master bedroom is the garden room or sleeping porch--practically a necessity in Texas in the days before air conditioning.
Turn right to the sunny boy's bedroom on the south end of the house, occupied first by Tom and Buster Wharton and then Winfield Scott Jr. Go north down the passage to the front of the second floor hallway to the dressing room and sitting room used by visiting ladies. Turn right to see the bird's eye maple and mahogany guest rooms, named after the woods predominating in those rooms. The third floor includes two servants' rooms and a party room, while the basement features storage spaces, a furnace room and a laundry. The only additional structures remaining on the grounds are a tea house, pergola and carriage house/garage.
