Is Portuguese Spoken in Spain?

Portuguese is not an official or widely spoken language in Spain.

• Official language of Spain: Spanish (Castilian) nationwide.
• Co-official regional languages: Catalan/Valencian, Galician, Basque, Aranese (Occitan).
• Portuguese is the official language of Portugal (and Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, etc.).

Border Areas

In Galicia (NW Spain), Galician is closely related to Portuguese (common medieval ancestor: Galician-Portuguese). Mutual intelligibility is high. In Olivenza (disputed border town, administered by Spain, claimed by Portugal), some elderly residents still speak Portuguese dialect.

Otherwise, Portuguese is heard mainly from tourists, cross-border workers, and immigrant communities—not as a community language.
