How many different aboriginal languages are spoken today?

There are approximately 300 different aboriginal languages spoken today. However, many of these languages are endangered, and some have already gone extinct. The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) estimates that there were once around 700 different aboriginal languages spoken in Australia. However, due to the effects of colonisation and dispossession, many of these languages have been lost.
