Safe Driving Tips for India

India is a country with difficult traffic and road conditions. The development of India's road infrastructure has been very slow: the number of automobiles has increased at least 170 times compared to the increase in roads, which has expanded only nine times. Roads outside the cities are poorly maintained and congested. Given this, it is best to have a safety oriented attitude when driving the streets of India.
  1. Coordination with Traffic authorities

    • India has a transportation department, and you can visit one of its satellite offices to clarify traffic rules.

    Speed limit

    • For all roads in India, except the national highway and in commercial and residential areas, the speed limit is 50 KPH. For national highways and beyond the outer ring, the speed limit is 60 KPH. For super highways, with toll gates, the speed limit is 80 KPH. For Savitri flyovers, the speed limit is 40 KPH and for residential and commercial areas, the speed limit is 25 KPH.

    Tinted Glasses

    • It is against the law in India to tint or otherwise darken car windows. The front and rear windows must have at least 70 percent visibility and the side windows 50 percent visibility. The front window should be laminated safety glass.

    Avoid alcohol consumption when driving

    • For the first offense of drinking while driving, the punishment is up to six months in jail and a fine. Subsequent violations within three years can mean a penalty of up to two years and a higher fine.

Take note of guidelines to foreigners

    • Tourists should ask their guides about driving safety in India.
