Get information about the areas you are traveling to. Ask your travel agent what areas have a high crime rate. The State Department's website has warnings for international travelers. They will have information on areas to avoid.
Be aware of pickpocket scams. Be wary of people acting drunk and bumping into you. Pickpockets may try to distract you by asking for directions while an accomplice lifts your cash. Stay alert when talking with strangers.
Put money in different pockets. Use front pockets. If you divide money up and are the victim of a pickpocket they won't get all your cash.
Use a money belt. These are pouches that can be worn under your clothes. Also consider pinning your cash. Use a safety pin to attach cash to the inside of your pockets.
Wear the strap of a purse across the front of your body instead of over your shoulder. Avoid leaving your purse hung on the back of a chair or under the table at a restaurant.
Keep large amounts of cash and most credit card at home or in a hotel safe when traveling. Avoid pulling out large wads of cash which may attract attention.
