Native American Clothing at Mission San Juan Capistrano

Native Americans at Mission San Juan Capistrano wore clothing made from locally sourced materials. They wove fabrics from yucca fibers and tule (a bulrush) to create robes and skirts. Men typically wore a breechclout—a strip of cloth wrapped around the waist and passed between the legs—sometimes with a poncho or shirt of animal skin. Women wore tunic-style dresses reaching the knees, often with a shawl. Both genders decorated their garments with beads, shells, and feathers.
