Requirements to Become a Security Guard in California

Mandatory Requirements (BSIS)

1. Age: 18+
2. Legal Status: US citizen or permanent resident (Green Card)
3. Education: High school diploma or GED
4. Criminal History: No felony convictions; no misdemeanors involving moral turpitude, violence, drugs, weapons (some exceptions with rehabilitation)
5. Training: Complete BSIS-approved 40-hour "Power to Arrest" course (can be online + in-person)
6. Exam: Pass BSIS written test (multiple choice)
7. Live Scan Fingerprinting: DOJ/FBI background check
8. Application: Submit to BSIS with fees (~$55 + Live Scan ~$70)

Guard Card (Registration)

Upon approval: Guard Registration Card (valid 2 years). Must carry on duty.

Armed Guard (Exposed Firearm Permit)

• Additional 14-hour firearms course (BSIS-approved)
• Range qualification
• Separate application, fees, psych evaluation (if required)
• Must already have Guard Card

Batons / Chemical Agents

• Separate 4–8 hr certified courses each
• Added to Guard Card
