Norwegian Citizenship: 7-Year Residency Rule (with Exceptions)

The standard path to Norwegian citizenship requires 7 years of continuous legal residence in Norway (out of the last 10).

Key Requirements

• Residency: Time on asylum, student visas, or temporary permits generally does not count.
• Language: Pass the Bergenstest (or equivalent B1/B2 Norwegian).
• Civic integration: Complete 50–75 hours of social studies (waived for some).
• Clean record: No unpaid fines, serious crimes, or outstanding debts.

Exemptions

Nordic citizens: 2 years.
Spouses/partners of Norwegians: 3 years (with 4 years total residence).
Children under 18: Included in parent's application.
Exceptional contributions to Norway: Discretionary waiver.

Applications are processed by the UDI (Directorate of Immigration). Processing takes 10–18 months.
