Applying for a US Visa

Traveling to the United States of America is an exciting process that requires several key steps and many pieces of important documentation. In order to get started, you will first need to determine eligibility, complete the appropriate visa form and then set up an interview. The process can take many months, but with clear planning and proper organization, you can be on your way to applying for a U.S. visa in a matter of days.

      Review the visa classification chart provided by the U.S. Department of State. Visit the Department of State Travel website to determine the type of visa that is necessary for your entry into the United States of America. Sponsored by the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Travel State orders each purpose of travel according to the required visa and supplemental documentation. A determined period of time has been assigned for each purpose of travel and can be reviewed on the website. Example applicants include: athletes, amateur & professional persons, business visitors, tourists and exchange visitors.

      Visit the Department of State Travel website to download the appropriate visa application. Or contact 202-663-1225 to request a visa form. For information about submission dates and times as well as other general information, call 202-663-1541. Visa forms include the following categories: Family Immigration, Adopting a Child, Marriage to a Foreign National, Diversity Visa Program, Employment visa, Employment: Iraqi or Afghan translators/interpreters, Employment: Iraqis - Worked for/on behalf of US Government, Employment: Religious Workers.

      Schedule an interview appointment months in advance of your estimated travel time. Be sure you understand the necessary requirements and documentation necessary for entry. Have all documents available at the time of the interview. Provide copies, if necessary, and confirm the purpose of travel to ensure eligibility.

      Verify fees and complete the visa process. Obtain a passport size photo, apply for a passport (if applicable), pay all fees, provide a financial record of support, prove financial stability in home country, and sign and date your visa application. Expect a lengthy wait time and plan ahead with early submission of all visa documents and forms.

      Be sure to provide evidence that your visit to the U.S. is temporary. To establish the temporary nature of your visit, provide documents that show a clear time period for travel, university financial aid certificate(s) or program dates, and business documentation. Be sure to complete all security clearance procedures.
