How to Plan a Travel Route in Germany

Germany is awash with sightseeing attractions; from medieval castles and quaint villages to the snow-capped Bavarian Alps and the famous wine regions. The German tourist board has come up with the clever idea of giving aptly descriptive names to the best tourist routes. You can plan a travel route through Germany using one or more of these routes to get the most out of your time on the road.

  Take the German Castle Road if you want to see more than 70 castles and palaces. Along the 975km route from Mannheim to Prague you will encounter medieval castles, royal palaces and romantic villages. The scenery is stunning and towns such as Rothenburg and Heidelberg are great places to stop off for a few days along the way.

  The Romantic Road is one of Germany's most popular tourist routes, over two million people travel the route each year and it gets very busy during the peak season. Plan a travel route in Germany using the Romantic Road and you can take a step back in time to medieval villages and towns such as Füssen, Rothenburg and Würzburg. The road itself is 270km long, starts off in the city of Wurzburg and ends at Neuschwanstein Castle.

  If you are taking children with you on your trip then they will be delighted with either the Fairy Tale Road or the German Toy Road. The Fairy Tale Road stretches for 600km from Hanau to Bremmen and takes you to the locations of some of the tales from the Brothers Grimm. It also offers mountain, lakes, rivers, villages and the actual home of the Brother Grimm, better known as Sleeping Beauty's Castle. The Toy Road runs for 300km from Zirndorf to Waltershausen and is popular among collectors and lovers of toys. Along the route you can visit the Playmobil Fun Park and numerous toy manufactures and museums.

  If you love German wine then plan a travel route in Germany using the compact 85km wine route. The road winds through some of the prettiest towns and scenic wine country in Palantine. It's the perfect route for relaxing and is especially popular with cyclists who can take advantage of the warm climate in the region to get out on the road.

  For some of Germany's most stunning landscapes try the 450 km long, German Alpine Road. The road is Germany's oldest tourist route and runs from Lindau to Berchtesgaden. Along the road you can take in 21 lakes and 25 castles, and of course the spectacular Alpine Mountains. The road will take you through the best ski resorts and historic towns in Germany and is a definite must if you want to catch a glimpse of a picture postcard Germany at its most beautiful.
