Camping and backpacking are popular ways to enjoy the outdoors and get plenty of fresh air and sunshine. While there are fees associated with camping in public or private campgrounds, they do not come anywhere close to what it would cost to stay in a motel or hotel. Campers and backpackers also enjoy the night sky and campfires at night. Backpacking trips may be the least expensive way to enjoy an adventure vacation outdoors and experience scenery only available to those who use their own two feet, or a horse, mule, or donkey.
Couch surfing can be a way to travel almost anywhere in the world and stay in private rooms, or on couches in people's homes. The phenomenon started in the mid 2000's and as of June 2010, more than 74,000 cities have members where couches or bedrooms are available. The members cannot charge for their lodging services, but visitors typically leave a small gift, offer to clean the house, or cook some meals. According to the Couch Surfing website, more than 3.6 million people have had a positive experience using the program as of June 2010.
Some schools rent out their dorm rooms during summer break for low rates. This type of adventure vacation provides the vast resources of universities and colleges to guests who can ride bikes, take hikes, explore a city or the countryside around the school.
Youth or senior hostels are dotted throughout the world and are a sound alternative to staying in expensive hotels, and participate in adventure vacation activities like mountain climbing, deep sea fishing, cycling or hiking, whether it's in the wilderness or taking advantage of nature preserves tucked into a city's boundaries.
