Where did explorers expect northwest passage to lead?

The explorers expected the Northwest Passage to lead to the Pacific Ocean. They believed that there was a navigable route through the Arctic Archipelago that would allow ships to sail from Europe to Asia without having to go around the Cape of Good Hope. This route would have been much shorter and faster than the existing route, and it would have opened up new trade opportunities for European merchants.
