- World Tourism Day began in 1980; however, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) was established in 1975.
- The date of September 27 was chosen as World Tourism Day in 1979 to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of the UNWTO in 1970.
- Since then, World Tourism Day has been observed worldwide to raise awareness of the contribution of tourism to economic development, social inclusion and cultural understanding.
