Zapatism is an anti-capitalist movement rooted in indigenism, socialism and anarchism. It is based on the principles of autonomy, self-sufficiency and mutual aid. Zapatismo seeks to create a new society based on the principles of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), which is a rebel army formed by indigenous people in Chiapas, Mexico.
The EZLN was formed in 1994 in response to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which they believed would harm indigenous communities. The EZLN's goals are to improve the lives of indigenous people, to achieve social justice and to create an autonomous region in Chiapas.
Zapatism has had a significant impact on Mexico and on indigenous movements worldwide. It has inspired other indigenous movements to fight for their rights and autonomy. Zapatismo has also been influential in the development of anti-capitalist and anarchist movements.
