Sailboat Promise

• Sailboat Promise offers cruises on the waters of Oregon during spring, summer and fall. Adventurers will set sail about the Promise, a 51-foot boat with a fiberglass hull and a teak wood interior featuring three staterooms, a salon and a combination pilot house and galley. Cruises ply the Columbia and Willamette rivers, either from Portland to Oregon City or Portland to Astoria. Expeditions last from two hours to 2 days, and up to six people can embark on any trip. As of 2010, summer rates ranged from $300 for two hours (up to six passengers) to $1,000 for two-day overnight trip with five or six passengers. Spring and fall rates are less, and discounts are available in any season by booking 30 to 90 days in advance.

Island Sailing

• Island Sailing, founded in Portland in 1979, offers Columbia River skippered cruises on a variety of boats that carry four to eight passengers at a time. Half, full and multiple-day charters are available. Those wishing to learn sailing skills can include instruction on their cruises. Cruises may visit destinations such as downtown Portland and St. Helens to the west, and Government Island and Beacon Rock to the east. Prices vary according to trip length and boat used; in 2010, weekend rates ranged fro $154 to $420. A 10 percent discount is given for multi-day excursions and a 15 percent discount applies during the off season, October to April. Island Sailing also offers lessons and boat rentals.

Scovare Expeditions

• For adventurers and those just wanting an afternoon on the water, Scovare Expeditions offers a variety of charter sailing packages. Scovare operates three yachts, including a 26-foot boat, a 45-foot model and a 50-foot sailboat with four staterooms. Short cruises along the Willamette River are available for lunch, dinner and sunset, with food included. Afternoon jaunts with soft drinks are available, too. In August 2010, Scovare's 90-minute river sailing tour was priced at $60 per person Friday through Sunday ($40 other days). One- to 12-day cruises are available and the truly serious sailor can book a three-week Pacific cruise from Oregon to Hawaii.
